We all sleep, but did you know that the way you sleeps says a lot about who we are as individuals? For instance, if you sleep on your back, it often means your the strong, silent type; and if you sleep on your stomach, it typically means you have an open, easy going, and playful personality. So what happens when you throw different sleeping styles and personalities into one bed? Or really, any two individual personalities into one of the most intimate and vulnerable situations we humans experience?

When we sleep, our subconscious minds take over. Because of this, the body language we use with a partner while we snooze can be a remarkably precise way to gauge what’s going on in our relationships. We have some ideas about what these different sleeping positions means for you and your partner.

Liberty (27%) – If you and your partner sleep facing opposite directions with space in between, don’t worry. This is actually a good thing. According to some studies don’t this position shows that couples are connected and secure in themselves. It also shows both closeness and independence in the relationship.

Cherish (23%) – If you sleep back-to-back but you touch with your backs this is also a good thing. This means that both partners are relaxed and comfortable with each other and often happens in newer couples or those that have been together for under a year.

Pillow Talk (3%) –  When couples sleep face-to-face, it’s an unconscious sign that they yearn for intimacy and close communication throughout the night. These couples take care of each other and love heart-to-heart chats.

Lover’s Knot (8%)  This position starts with a tangled position, but then unravels after 10 minutes or so. Believe it or not, this position is a sign of a strong relationship. It is a compromise between intimacy and independence, allowing for the best of both worlds.

Spooning (18%) – This is a traditional position which shows one partner taking a protective stance of the other. Although it’s sweet it can also be a little saucy. It’s a vulnerable position but also says “I trust you.”  In the same category there is also the “loose spoon” position. This is typically dones when couples are fans of spooning but as their relationship matures each individual wants a little more independence and a better night’s sleep.

The Romantic (4%) – This sweet position, in which one partner rests their head on the other’s chest, while their legs are intertwined is often seen in early relationships. It’s a very nurturing position and creates a sense of protections. It also represents vibrant, passionate, or rekindled love. There is a high level of trust in this position.

The Lovers (2%) – This is an extremely intimate position and very rare. This shows a lack of independence from each other. It tends to happen when there is either intense emotions at play or at the start of a romantic relationship.

The Superhero (3%) – If one partner takes the “starfish position,” one in which they sprawl out and hog the bed, this can mean that they tend to be selfish. One partner dominates the relationship while the other takes a secondary role. If this is happening in your relationship it’s time to have an honest conversation.

Miscellaneous – Comfort is the key to this sleeping position. Whether you’re together or apart, it just works. This type of sleep position often happens in tired parents who have children wandering in at night. They need sleep whenever they can get it and they understand and still are close. If this happens for a long period of time it may cause some distance between the couple.
