February is American Heart Month. It is recognized each year to remind us all to keep our hearts healthy and happy! According to a 2011 study by the American Heart Association, poor sleep quality is linked to an increased risk of high blood pressure, which is a potential cause of heart disease. If you are struggling to get to sleep here are a few quick tips to help start you on the path for better sleep:

  • Exercise:  According to the American Heart Association’s 2013 exercise standards, it is important to schedule in 40 minutes of moderate to vigorous aerobic exercise at least three to four times per week. Start small with taking a walk around your block, and work towards going for longer distances. From there a light jog, etc. You’ll be amazed after a few weeks time how much more energy you have during the day as well as getting better sleep!
  • Avoid excess caffeine: Avoid caffeine where possible. Particularly before bed as it can keep you awake and make it harder to relax, and fall asleep.
  • Establish an evening routine: An evening routine when preparing for bed can help tell your body it is time to sleep. This can include turning off electronic devices, turning off the lights, having a fan or some kind of white noise in the background, reading a book. Also a soothing activity such as a hot shower or bath can relax you and prepare you for sleep.
