QUESTION:
My boyfriend has mentioned to me that once in awhile he jolts awake during the night and it feels like maybe for a second his heart has stopped beating. What might be causing this? Is this something that he should be concerned about? –Darla O., SK
ANSWER:
This is not uncommon if it is very infrequent. Sometimes in dream sleep our heart rate changes. If we awakened suddenly we can be aware of it. Whether or not to be concerned about it depends on what else may be going on. For instance is he overweight and snoring too? Then by all means see his doctor. Does he have any heart issues or high blood pressure? Then see his doctor. Is he on any sedatives or psychoactive drugs including alcohol? Then see his doctor. And, since most people snore while sleeping on their back, you would want a mattress which allows you to be comfortable on your side or in which ever position you snore the least. (Your bed partner will probably be able to tell you which position is best).
Remember too that snoring is a sign that your airway is at least partially closed when you don't want it to be. It is a signal that breathing MIGHT not be okay. If you are also gasping at night and sleepy in the day, then you should consider a visit to your physician who may refer you to a sleep center.
