Getting a good night’s sleep is important to overall health.

While, of course, a new, comfortable mattress can lead to better sleep, there are also other habits that can increase your chances of feeling rested in the morning. We also carry many other products such as pillows that can increase your likelihood of a comfortable night of rest. With the holiday season upon us and Daylight Saving Time recently ending, it can be hard to maintain a normal, healthy sleep schedule.

Maintaining a healthy sleep regimen through Daylight Savings is important to feeling rested.

On November 5th, Daylight Saving Time ended. In the fall and the spring when there is a time change, it can mess with sleeping schedules. While many people prefer the end of Daylight Saving Time because it gives them an “extra” hour of sleep, but there can be disadvantages to getting out of your regular sleeping schedule.

Instead of trying to get an extra hour of sleep, this can be a great time to develop and keep a healthy sleeping schedule. Instead of going to bed later and getting your sleep all out of whack, try waking an hour earlier or maintaining your normal schedule. If you’ve been wanting to alter your sleeping routine for better results, this is a great time to do just that.

We recommend getting a health amount of sleep as lack of sleep can lead to a weakened immune system which can increase your chances of catching sick during this cold/flu season. Also, a slight disruption of normal sleep patterns can trigger or contribute to Seasonal Affective Disorder.

The Beautyrest Sleep Tracker monitors your sleep patterns.

If you generally struggle with sleeping and feeling rested in the morning, the Beautyrest Sleep Tracker can help with that. This device monitors your sleep patterns. With this information, you can get a better idea of what is going on with you while you sleep which can lead you to make the necessary adjustments for a better night’s rest.

If you are looking to change your sleeping regime for the better, the Beautyrest Sleep Tracker is a product we carry that is great for achieving those results. Being aware of your body’s rhythms and patterns can lead to making the changes needed for you to get good rest.

Here are some other tips to help you adjust to the time change and get in a better schedule.

With the daylight hours getting shorter, it can mess up your perception of when to sleep. So, these tips are a great way to maintain a regular routine even with the winter months.

1: Get ready for bed and quiet your mind.

After a long day of preparing for Thanksgiving or other holiday events, it can be hard to slow down and get your brain in the mode for sleep. Taking fifteen minutes before bedtime to sit quietly, meditate, or pray is a great way to calm the mind. Getting into a routine of relaxing and unwinding can make a difference in your ability to fall asleep.

2: Try to go to sleep before midnight.

Sleep experts have found that each hour you sleep before the midnight hour can be worth nearly two hours of sleep after midnight. Going to sleep before midnight and giving yourself between 7-9 hours of sleep per night can help you feel more refreshed in the morning. Make sure to give yourself fifteen minutes to a half hour to transition into sleep. So, if you plan to go to bed at 10 pom, start getting into bed at 9:30.

3: Slowly transition into a better sleep schedule.

If you have an erratic sleep schedule, it could leave you feeling unrested much of the time. Making gradual changes can help you get into a consistent, healthy sleep routine. The goal is to go to bed and wake up at the same time each day. This means you shouldn’t sleep in for more than an extra hour, maybe two, on the weekends. Also, slowly going to bed earlier or getting up earlier can help. Try going to bed 15 minutes earlier for a few days and then another 15 minutes after that until you are falling asleep at a decent hour.

4: Make sure you are sleeping on a comfortable mattress that isn’t sagging or uncomfortable.
